- Categorise
You'll need five large storage containers to organize your junk before you start decluttering your life. Each container should have one of the following labels:
- Rubbish: Items that should be thrown away since they can't be recycled
- Recycle: Items that can be recycled for the trash bin
- Repairs: Shoes that need to be resoled are examples of items that need to be repaired.
- Donations: Items that you no longer require or use but that someone else could benefit from.
- Put away: Items that don't belong in the space you're cleaning, such as runners in the kitchen, mugs in the bedrooms and so on.
Everything else that doesn't belong in one of these containers should find a home in the room you're clearing out.
- Take your time
If you're new to decluttering, even five minutes a day can help you get started. You don’t need to declutter the entire house in one weekend. Gradually build your momentum and go about it.
- View your home as a visitor
It's easy to lose sight of how your home seems to a new visitor. Enter your home as though you were paying a visit to a friend. Make changes based on your first impression of how tidy and orderly the house is.
- Do it room by room
When you are just starting to declutter, going for the entire home in one go can be overwhelming. Adopt the room by room strategy and start with one room. Add hooks to the back of your closet door to hang purses and jewelry? Use DIY shelves to prevent things from piling up on the counter?
- Declutter regularly
Even the most diligent homeowners who keep their homes clean can accumulate clutter. Rather than being frustrated by the clutter, accept it as normal and commit to regular cleanups to maintain a clutter-free house.
